community of fate of Alang's migrant workers from UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha

Migration of workers from this part o the country is not a new phenomenon. The origin of modern day migration goes back to the colonial period, with the dispatch of indentured labour to erstwhile British colonies. This happened because British wished to replace Black slave labour with the indentured labour after the abolition of slavery. More than 25,000 migrant workers who are mostly from the Bhojpuri speaking (a dialect of Hindi) belt of from UP, Bihar and Jharkhand, one of India's most backward states, work at Alang besides Odisha. This is a case of migration within the country among different states. These are the people mostly from farmer families who choose to endanger their life to earn their livelihood instead of committing suicide as is being witnessed in most of the prosperous states like Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Maharshtra. International Labour Organisation has noted that historically migration was predominantly from this very area.
Migrant workers that come from the state of Odisha come from villages of districts of Khurda, Nayagath and Ganjam. It is estimated that Gujarat has about 800,000 workers from Odisha. A large part of it find job in shipbreaking activity.
It has been noted that from the villages of Ganjam district, at least one man left each household in search for a job. In Ganjam's city of Berhampur many people
go to Alang to look for a job. A lot of shipbreaking victims live in the Ganjam districtvillages Adapada and Khaling Panchyat. The village of Adapada has got as many as 22 shipbreaking widows.
Khaling is another big village of 5,000 inhabitants. Villagers have migrated
from Khaling to Alang in search of a job. Most of them work at the shipbreaking
yards of Alang as loaders.
These migrant workers from UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha constitute a community of fate.
The plight of migrant workers of this area for over a century is yet to be fully documented.
Given below is a list of villages from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha from where migrant workers go to ship-breaking yard for work.
